Sedation Dentist in Erlanger
When Local Anesthesia Is Not Enough
For most dental procedures that Dr. Sand Wall performs, from filling placement to laser gum surgery, a local anesthetic is all that is required to eliminate discomfort. However, we realize that some patients are anxious and fearful of dental treatment, and that’s why Dr. Sand Wall offers a sedation method that can be used an addition to local anesthesia to help produce a feeling of ease: nitrous oxide.
Safe and Effective Nitrous Oxide
One of the safest sedation methods available, nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is administered via a mask worn over the nose. Mixed with oxygen to produce a feeling of relaxation, nitrous oxide takes effect within minutes of being administered. Patients often report a tingling or vibrating sensation in the arms and legs, followed by warmth and a feeling of euphoria. Most importantly, patients feel no discomfort at all during the dental procedure. Nitrous oxide is easily controlled by our highly-trained staff, so the depth of sedation can be increased or decreased quickly if necessary. One of the biggest benefits of laughing gas is that once the breathing apparatus is removed, the sensations wear off within a few minutes and leave the patient with no hangover effect whatsoever. You can even drive yourself home from your appointment after receiving nitrous oxide, something that’s impossible with oral or IV sedation methods.
